Standard Frame Sizes and Framed Art

There’s a lot of art out there in the world that needs framing; posters, prints, paintings, tilework, etc. Much of it is custom sized and needs to be taken in to be measured by your local framers to give you the best fit and the best look. However there are a lot of standard sizes that art makers try to stick to to make it easy for galleries and private buyers to display their work. At Frame USA, while we can produce custom sized frames easily, we also have frames available in nearly every conceivable standard art size. This makes it easy when you have something and you want to find a picture frame for it quick and easy.

There are the small photo sizes that we are familiar with that the kids’ school pictures are usually released in. 4 x 6, 5 x 7, 8 x 10 and 11 x 14. These all include easel backs for standing on a desk or table, and there are some sizes in between like 8 x 12 and 7 x 7 that are available as standard.

There are plenty of mid range sizes. These fit items like theater posters and playbills from performances and concerts, and smaller watercolor paintings and art. You can get an 11 x 17 frame, 10 x 13, 13 x 19 are all sizes that go with these kinds of art.

If you’re wanting to find standard photo frame sizes and framed art online, there are plenty of bigger standard sizes that will go with your movie posters and larger art prints. A 24 x 36 frame  (or a 36 x 24 frame if your art is oriented landscape style) and 27 x 41 are both popular movie poster sizes. However 24 x 30 and 22 x 28 are also popular sizes as far as art prints are concerned.

So keep in mind that you don’t always need to get custom framing for your art. You can shop for photo frames online, or poster frames or any frames and find them in the frame sizes that you are looking for.

  1. I had no idea that there were standardized frame sizes. I always figured that there was a lot of variety in the size of art, so frame sizes really couldn’t be standardized. I guess there’s a lot of custom framing that you can do as well, but this was really good information in any case. Thanks for taking the time to share.
