In the framing world we can sometimes be consumed with large frames that are perfect for gallery walls. It’s time to shine the spotlight on the little guys, the frames made for tabletops, shelves and desks. While these tabletop frames can still be utilized within gallery walls, and we encourage that, they’re best suited for standing on surfaces. In this blog we’ll explore the sizes that are considered tabletop frames, how to utilize them in your home or office décor, and how to incorporate larger sizes alongside small sizes on your console tables.
Tabletop Frames: Common Sizes
For a frame to be “meant” to be a tabletop frame it must come with something to allow for it to stand up without falling. For most frames that is considered an easel back. The sizes below are generally considered tabletop frame sizes. All these frames when purchased from frameusa.com will come standard with an easel back that allows you to sit on any surface. For wood frames and metal frames, these sizes will also come with glass, for poly frames such as our Simply Poly poster frame will come standard with styrene. Almost every one of our picture frames on FrameUSA.com will come in these sizes making it incredibly easy to match or find similar frames to those already in your home or office.

Styling Tabletop Frames
When it comes to small tabletop sizes, choosing the best frame really comes down to how much available space there is. Just like the larger sizes, all our smaller tabletop frames are sized based on the image they will fit. However, if you are in the market for a small frame for a shelf or desk, you generally have a specific area that it must fit into. For that reason, you’ll need to determine the exterior size of your piece to know whether something is going to fit. To find the exterior size of your piece you’ll just add together the width of the frame moulding you are considering with both dimensions of your image size. You’ll also need to keep in mind that a portion of that image will be covered by the frame itself. To account for the lip of the frame, simply subtract ¼ inch from both measurements. For example a 4×6 image that will be framed with an American Value Large #797 will have an exterior size of 6.5×8.5.
Creative Ways to Arrange and Style Your Frames
Now that you know the sizes available for tabletop frames and how to determine the exterior size of your desired frame, all that is left is styling! The easiest way is to find a frame you like and set it on your desk or shelf. To incorporate other décor pieces such as candles or plants, pair bulky items, such as a vase with thinner mouldings like our Classic Series or Glory Metal. This will prevent your open shelves or desk from feeling too full or busy. While this series is specifically about the smaller frames, don’t let that stop you from breaking the norm. Consider turning your large size frame into the tabletop frame. Using larger sizes and layering them with smaller ones will add visual movement to your home. Just make sure that they have something to rest against! This method also allows you to mix and match different textures and materials without them getting lost.
The most important thing about styling your home with frames, is that they reflect your personal style. By doing that, you’re guaranteeing that your favorite pieces will always shine. At Frame USA, we’re just here to provide you with inspiration and help create that magic one frame at time.
