On June 10, 1924 a handful of pioneering physicians and social workers met in Chicago to form the American Heart Association. They believed from the start that scientific research could lead the way to better treatment, prevention and ultimately a cure. In 1948 the association reorganized, transforming from a professional scientific society to a nationwide voluntary health organization, and became The American Heart Association that we have today.
Every 43 seconds someone dies from heart disease, stroke or another cardiovascular disease. Heart Disease is the number one killer worldwide and stroke ranks second globally. Even when those conditions don’t result in death, they cause disability and diminish the quality of life. American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke.
33 million volunteers and supports as well as more than 3400 employees unite through a shared focus on cardiovascular health. Their 2020 goal is to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans as well as reduce the deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20%.
