Popular sizes for wall frames at Frame USA
It is important for us to clarify how our sizes work in general. Here is the list of all of the sizes that we consider to be standard frame sizes:
In our experience, these are the most popular and most utilized sizes overall. The majority of our wall frames come in the sizes listed above, however we also offer custom sizing for non-standard framing needs. These sizes cover a wide range of photograph sizes, home decor, poster sizes, art print sizes, and many other common sizes we see every day. They are used for living room decor, for decorating offices and businesses, and for displaying art in gallery settings. Our most popular sizes are:
5×7
5×7 is a very popular frame size because this is a common size for photographs to be printed. 5×7″ is small enough to not take up too much space, but big enough to be able to see detail in your photo or art print. This size makes for great tabletop frames and is easy to display.
8×10
8×10 picture frames are top sellers at Frame USA. Not only because it is a common picture size, but our 8×10″ frames include a mat for a 5×7 image! These mats are removable, so if you’re framing something larger you can easily remove and re-purpose the included mat. This size is especially popular for art prints because these medium sized frames can easily either be hung on a wall or displayed on a desk. It’s the perfect size for home decor.
11×14
11×14 frames also include an off white mat, but for an 8×10 image. Many of our customers love this size because they can use the frame with the mat, or remove the mat and highlight their 11×14 photographs. Our picture frames all offer this versatility, making Frame USA’s picture frames perfect for any occasion or event.
If you are looking for a medium sized picture frame, the 16×20 size is a great choice. Our 16×20 picture frames include an off white mat for an 11×14 image. This option provides just over 2” of matting on each side of your image. This is a great size picture frame because you can make it a highlight piece on your wall, or part of a mixture with other frames to form a collage on your wall.
24×36
Our largest popular size big picture frame is our 24×36 size. 24×36 is the main big picture frame size that most posters that are sold come in. Therefore if you are looking to frame a poster for a dorm room, your office or house, or to give as a gift, this is the perfect picture frame size for you.
When choosing the best picture frame size for you, always make sure to measure your image first. All of our frame sizes are based on the inside dimensions. Therefore if you have an 8×10 image and do not want to use the mat, you still want to order an 8×10 frame. If you have an 11×14 image and do want to include a mat, it is important to order a larger frame size to accommodate this.
Now the question is what is a custom size frame? A custom size frame here at Frame USA is any size outside of our standard 32 sizes (refer to chart listed above). We can produce almost any size frame your heart can imagine. Our only limitations come into play with the width of the moulding- the thinner the frame, the smaller the maximum size will be.
A square picture frame helps create a more modern and clean feel. Square picture frames are more a little different than traditional rectangular frames. Our most popular square picture frame sizes include:
We hope this article on our most popular frame sizes has provided you with all of the information you may need when ordering our picture frames. If you ever have any other questions, please feel free to contact us via Email. We look forward to hearing from you!

Katongole John,
Unfortunately at this time we only sell to the Continental US and Canada.
Why is the border bigger in one dimension than the other?–if the frame is 16″ x 20″, and the image is 11″ x 14″,
the frame is 5″ bigger than the print in one dimension, and 6″ bigger than the print in the other dimension.
Do u have any square frames, with or without mats, and ant recommendations for square photos?
Hello Maria,
Yes we do have square picture frames, the largest ready made size we have is 12×12. If you need a larger size or if any of the ready made sizes aren’t working you are always able to purchase custom frames. Our frame sizes that we offer are listed here: https://www.frameusa.com/picture-frame-sizes If you have any more questions please don’t hesitate to ask!
I am interested in a weatherproof/waterproof frame for an 8×10 color photo that I would like to place at the gravesite of my Dad – it is a picture of our entire family with him in the center – a memorable photo. Any suggestions you may have would be most appreciated.
Thank you
JJS III
Hi James,
That is a wonderful thing to do for your father. Unfortunately none of our more decorative frames are made to be outside so they would not last very long. My recommendation is use one of our Bent Acrylic frames, however the nature of these frames does not provide protection for the image inside of them so it would be best to put a copy of the photo so you do not damage the orignal.

I had a flood in my basement, photo, posters, etc on floor getting ready to be hung. Able to save many and frames are in good shape but the matting needs to be replaced (that’s not the problem), what I need is the backing for the frames. Is there a way to buy them for standard frames? Looklng forward to hearing from you.
Hi Maggie,
If you have a bit of a DIY thumb you can definitely do it! The backing of our frames is either standard cardboard or black foamcore. both of which can be purchased at a craft store or even at Walmart/target. If you would much rather have them precut most local frame shops should be more than happy to cut you backing for a minimal fee. We unfortunately do not sell backing on our website separate from the frames.
You mentioned that your matting also needs to be replaced, I wanted to let you know for future references or even now that we actually have a matting company called mat designers that makes ordering mats for standard size frames super easy, you can even get samples of the mat mailed to you if you give us a call. https://www.frameusa.com/mat-designers
I hope this was helpful! Let us know if there is anything else we could do for you!
I found a couples album at Walmart and it hold 4.75″ x 6.5″. It’s only 3 dollars but will regular pictures fit in it?
Hello Emily,
I am unsure of how Walmart measures their frames, so don’t quote me on this but if they do it the standard way the frame should hold a 4.75 x 6.5 image. If you were to want to use a smaller picture you would have to get a mat to fit the image and the frame. Hope this helps!
I do portrait pencil drawing.
That is wonderful Emmanuel,
If you would like to get one of your pencil drawings framed check out our great selection of wood and metal frames at Frameusa.com. Show us your framed piece when its complete!

Question: I do pastels on sandpaper, mounted on archival foam core. I need a deep rabbet, a double-mat and non-reflective glass but my customers can’t afford a $250 framing job. Do you carry anything that can help me?
Great information really helpfully as I do a lot of abstract graffiti type art for the home and quite often it’s difficult to find frames that suit my artwork in the shops.
I’m in the U.K. but for my US customers I will point them your way if they want framing after delivery.
Thanks for recommending us XO Leon!
I am an illustrator and I want to make prints to sell and need to know the standard mat opening actual dimensions. This will help me know what size to make the image if I want the image to have a white border around the image (not go beyond the mat edge) or to know how large to make the image go beyond the mat edge. Hope this makes sense…
So For example, what is the standard opening mat size for an 11×14″ frame for a typical 8×10″ image? Is the mat opening size actually 8×10, or is the mat opening dimension actually 7.5x 9.5? Also need to know the same information for a 16 x 20″ frame for a standard 11×14″ image. is the actual mat opening 11×14″, or is it 10.5×15.5″?
Thank you for you help!

Great article and helpful for what is often an overlooked requirement. As a local photographer I am often challenged with what size to print nature photos.
What are your thoughts for choosing unusual frame dimensions to add dramatic impact to the photo?
I have a hard canvas print that is 11 wide by 24 tall and another hard canvas print that is 15 by 15. What size frames would I need for these two pictures?
Thank you

This really answered my drawback, thank you!
I make pressed botanical art, and I am considering offering some of my works for sale in local gift shops. I’d like to put them in frames that are the most sought after by customers currently. Can you tell me, based upon what your customers are purchasing, which of your standard sizes you think would be the most popular for wall art? Also, can you tell me, again based on what your customers are purchasing, what type, style, and color frames are the most popular right now? Thank you for any guidance your can give me.
Our most popular size frames for wall art are 8.5×11, 11×14, 16×20, 18×24 & 20×24.
Black wood frames are always a popular pick.
I’d like to purchase a frame with mat, measurements of 16×20 but want 2 inch beveled matting around it. What size frame would I need to by to achieve this?
Also have same issue for picture 35×20 that I would also like matting around picture and need to know appropriate size frame.
Please advise as soon as possible.
Thank you so much.

For your 16×20 with the 2 inch beveled matting you would need to go with a 20×24 frame.
For the issue on the larger size picture we would need a little more detail about what specifically you’re looking for. Give a call to one of our sales reps (800-577-5920) or send us an email ([email protected]) and we can further assist you with this.
Some really wonderful blog posts on this web site, thank you for contribution. “Careful. We don’t want to learn from this.” by Bill Watterson.

I am looking for some frames to hold graphics for a retail store. I plan to switch the graphics out 2-4 times a year. Can you recommend a certain frame that would work and be easy to open. Is there a frame you can attach to the wall and open/change without taking down the frame?
What you’re looking for is a front or side loading frame. We only offer back loading picture frames so unfortunately we do not carry what you are looking for.
Hi there, I have a question about mat openings. I’m not understanding how an 8×10 frame with a mat opening of 4.5×6.5 can have an image size of 5×7. Can you please explain it for me.
Thank you
Lucia

Hi,I read your blog named “Picture Frame Sizes – Most Popular” daily.Your humoristic style is awesome, keep it up! And you can look our website about radio masr.
I see, I supospe that would have to be the case.
Hello, I have a picture that is 35cm X 25cm. What size frame should I get inclusive of mounting board?
This was some great information; after all, if you are planning to hang any pictures in your home, you’ll want to know the right frame size. As the article points out a 16×20 frame will usually do it for most pictures. However, if you have an unusually sized picture then you might want to go with a custom frame just to make sure it will fit.
For 8×10 frame, what is the best width size for frame margin ?
We have a coach retiring after 35 years. We were thinking of a square frame where we can put a picture of his first and last team in the center and all the other teams around the edge. We want mat room to have as many players as possible sign. The center pictures probably about 8×10, but the rest 5×7.
Hi Angelia! We definitely can make this happen! Give our customer service a call and they’ll be able to get you all set up with the perfect retirement gift for the coach! They can be reached at 1-800-577-5920
