Calling All Artists – We Want To License Your Work!

You first met our Licensing Director, Angela, in our previous blog post all about the licensing process. As mentioned in that post, each week she pulls images to be voted on for new posters.  While Angela has gotten some really amazing posters (talking about you Catzilla VS Robot), there are bound to be countless of images and artists that were missed, passed over,  or never even found. That’s why we’re here, we’re on the lookout for new posters!

Are you an artist with super awesome artwork?

Have your friends, family, customers and/or yourself ever used the following words to describe your art:

Unique, edgy, enticing, artsy, exciting, relevant, current, top selling, old school cool, energetic, fresh, cultish, pop culture, ground breaking, timeless, striking

Do you have a piece of artwork that you’re just dying to get out to the masses? Are you just waiting on your big break?

If any or all of these fit you as an artist, Let’s talk.

Details

There are a few things we wanted to put out there, and set straight before you think we’re just sending out licensing contracts to any and every artist we come across. We’re a small company so we have to be pretty selective in what we choose. The marketing team and CEO sees and signs off on every single one of our publishing titles. The only images that get the seal of approval are those that we feel our customer base will sell and hang on their walls. There are a handful of images each week, that while we love as individuals, we just don’t see our customers wanting them, so ultimately we pass on them. So if we decide to pass on your artwork, it doesn’t mean that it is a bad piece, it just means it’s not the right fit, DON’T GIVE UP!

One of the other common issues that leads to the team passing on an image, is the proportions.  The majority of our posters are 24×36. If we get a piece that we can’t make work those proportions, no matter how much we love we have to pass on it for posters. We chose that size of poster because it is a standard size frame that people would be able to buy!  If you’re curious about the type of posters we choose to publish, all of our publishing titles are marked with a  on Posterservice.com.

The Best Part

Finally, once your image gets picked and you agree to allow us to license the image, Angela will negotiate a fair advance, (money paid upfront) and a royalty rate, (percentage of each poster sale that the artist receives). A simple licensing agreement is made for the image, and once that is signed, we’re in business!

All of our posters are printed using a local printer. The reason that we use a local printer is so that we can control and sign off on the final print of the poster. We spent this time choosing the images that we think will do awesome, we want to be able to make sure that translates to the printed piece.

If all of this sounds like a dream come true to you, then send Angela an email at [email protected] We look forward to doing business with you.

How Image Licensing Works

In addition to being really big fans of Frames, we also love us some art. We have a whole sister company, Posterservice, that is dedicated to providing the world with killer posters. We have a whole new venture that is in the works dedicated to providing great art on demand (Stay tuned for more information on this). So how in the world do we find and get these pieces? We sat down with Angela Aronow, Licensing Director for Posterservice to get the low down of how those images come to be.

General Image Licensing: How the Process Works

We love to license great art for posters, to keep our line diverse and fresh. The categories that have really started to rise in popularity in the past couple of years are Humor and Art. We licensed over half of the titles listed in our newest category on Posterservice.com. A few of the newest titles our Decay Skull, Alice in Wonderland, Beer Art History and Military Alphabet.

Decay Skull
Decay Skull PSA011490
Alice in Wonderland
Alice in Wonderland PSA011530
Beer Art History
Beer Art History PSA011495
Military Alphabet
Military Alphabet PSA011485

The licensing process starts with lots of images. The images that we gather are based on theme, art style, artist or whatever is trending in our lives. Our marketing team reviews these images each week, and decides which ones would be great additions to our poster line. The ultimate goal in this process is that the selected posters are ones that people want to hang on their walls. If a poster sells out within the first two years of us signing the title, it is considered a success. As long as their is demand for a poster, we will continue to produce the title. For those posters that continually fly off the shelves, we will reach back out to the artist and license their other pieces! For example, three artists that have done extremely well are Ralph Steadman, Marc Allante and Leonid Afremov.

Chosen Posters

After the selected art has been chosen, we talk with the artist or licensing agent about the images, and if there are any others we should also consider. As a result of the artist agreeing to let us license their work, an advance and royalty rate are negotiated and agreed upon by both parties. Advances are dollars paid upfront to the artist in order to license the image from them. The royalty is the percentage the artist gets paid from each poster sale, paid out quarterly. A simple licensing agreement is then signed by both parties to seal the deal.

Credit lines get added to the poster image, both for our company and for the artist. Once the proof is approved, we send the hi-res file to our printer, who prints a whole pallet of posters for us! These are then delivered to our warehouse. The final step in our licensing process is to make sure everyone knows about our new great posters!

If you or someone you know is an artist and may be interested in having their artwork produced into posters, contact Angela Aronow at [email protected]

Fantasy and Vintage Car Art Prints by Michael Fishel, For Sale

Bright. Colorful. Magical. Fantasy. These are some words that can easily describe the artwork of Michael Fishel. Michael Fishel is an illustrator that loves to paint with no restraints so that he can let his imagination flow onto the page.

Growing up, Fishel won a drawing contest with a drawing of a clown holding balloons. His drawing became the cover of a national Scholastics magazine, and that was where his love of drawing and painting began. His father used to sit him down and teach him how to draw ducks, birds, frogs, etc. This helped him to become aware of how nature inspires and applies to art. As a teenager, he loved wild cartoonish drawings of race cars, like in Hot Rod. But he also found an interest in the Great Fantasy Masters of Old. He decided that he wanted to start drawing cars, but with fantastical creatures driving them.

His work today is very much a mixture of both. You can find detailed paintings of fantasy art, vintage car art paintings, and a lot more colorful illustrations. His work has been posters, book covers, children’s book illustrations, greeting cards, and puzzles, and will soon be able to hang in your own home! With Art & Canvas, you will have the ability to print his art on demand, and hang it anywhere you would like!

Colorful Art for Sale by Dean Russo

You may, or may not, have heard of Dean Russo. But whether you are a fan, or soon to be fan, our upcoming print-on-demand website will give you access to print over 300 images from this motivated artist! Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Russo found that he was extremely inspired by the urban landscape; deserted buildings and walls re-imaged by lively murals and graffiti. He decided to take that style, and create pop art prints about animals, and what is truly happening behind just their face. Using all sorts of mediums, Russo paints different animals with bold, black outlines, and then bright colors and patterns. Doing this, he is able to portray the pureness and joy that comes with these beautiful creatures.

Russo also has other prints that are not related to only animals. Using his same eye-catching style, he creates prints about a lot of different topics. With the launch of Art & Canvas, you will have the opportunity to search through a ton of Dean Russo’s vivid and colorful art prints, to find the perfect one(s) for you!

Dorm Room Decorating

Dorm Room Decorating Tips for Back to School

Tips for Dorm Room Decorating

Dorm Room Decorating
When decorating your dorm room there are a few things to keep in mind. Make sure you’re having fun, get creative, and let your personality show through!

Times have changed since I graduated college ten years ago. However I recently helped my younger cousin move into her dorm at the University of Cincinnati. We decorated her walls together.

Whenever I decorate any room, I like to start by drawing a template. My cousin and I drew a little sketch of her room before we started. We positioned her bed and desk first because we were unable to use the wall space above them. Next we drew the areas that we wanted to decorate and decided what to put in these areas.

Most young adults going off to college are on a tight budget. The money they do have they’re trying to save that for food and fun activities, not room decorations. One inexpensive way to decorate your walls is with posters, either by themselves or in frames. This is what we did for my cousin. My cousin loves art, animals, and music so when we went to posterservice.com we shopped mainly in the art and music categories.

Since dorm rooms can be small, plain, and often have little to no natural light, we wanted to stick with colorful posters. An important interior design tip for decorating walls is to hang things in odd numbers, never even numbers. So on her smallest wall we chose 3 posters and hung them in a “V” shape. We called this “Marc’s Wall” because we only used posters by Marc Allante.

Chai Marc Allante Two Step Marc Allante A Portrait of Hong Kong Marc Allante

On the left of the wall, we hung up the poster titled “Chai” by Allante. In the middle bottom of the “V” shape, we used the poster “Two Step”, and on the right we hung “A Portrait of Hong Kong”. Some other great posters that are colorful and also very popular are Lion Rasta, Circulation, Melody of the Night and one of my favorites Let That Sh*t Go.

Pink Floyd Masse   Golden Road Grateful Dead
Summer Tour Grateful Dead

My cousin has an old soul and is a fan of classic rock music, so on Bob Marley Guitar one of her other walls we did a music theme. It was hard for us to narrow down our choices because Posterservice has such a great selection of music posters! We ended up going with Pink Floyd Masse, Grateful Dead – Golden Road, and Grateful Dead – Summer Tour in one area. We also used our black corrugated poster frame to hang The Beatles Yellow Submarine. My cousin also loves Bob Marley, so right above her bed we put a popular poster titled “Bob Marley Guitar”.

The final poster we hung in her dorm room was on her door. We decided for this spot to use one of her favorites, Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”. Once we were finished with her room, it went from looking like a prison cell to a comfortable, inviting, and fun living space!

The Wall Pink Floyd No matter what your style is, Posterservice has something for all personality types, interests, and hobbies. Ralph Steadman Savage Journey

Ralph Steadman – Artist Spotlight

Frame USA’s sister site Posterservice, Inc. recently added two new posters to our growing collection of pieces by Ralph Steadman.

Posterservice has several posters of Ralph Steadman’s illustrations, but the newest additions are titled “The Secret of Dreams” and “Savage Journey”.

Ralph Steadman Secret of Dreams   Ralph Steadman Savage Journey

The Secret of Dreams“, pictured on the right, is an illustration of Ralph Steadman’s interpretation of Sigmund Freud having the secret of dreams revealed to him in 1895. The poster shows Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis and one of the early 20th century’s most influential thinkers, sitting at his desk working. Behind Freud is a surreal mass of strange imagery, or “the secret of dreams”. Ralph Steadman spent over three years researching Freud and creating artwork inspired by him. He even visited Freud’s hometown and spent time in the rooms where he analyzed his patients. These works were ultimately published in an art book titled “Sigmund Freud”.

Savage Journey“, pictured on the left, is based on Hunter S. Thompson’s book “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”. Steadman illustrated the novel which was published in 1971. “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” tells a surreal nonlinear narrative of characters traveling to Las Vegas on a psychedelic journey. The book explores themes of the declining American dream and the 1960s counterculture. Steadman and Hunter S. Thompson had a long partnership of Thompson writing books and articles which Steadman made illustrations for.

Fear and Loathing
Posterservice Inc also has a poster of this famous drawing Steadman made for the book. The poster is self-titled “Fear and Loathing”. The Hunter S Thompson novel was adapted into a movie in 1988 which has become a cult classic. Steadman appears in the commentary for the movie in the DVD set, as well as in a documentary titled “Fear and Loathing in Gonzovision”.

Steadman has worked with numerous other authors including Ted Hughes, Adrian Mitchell, and Brian Patten. He has also illustrated covers for editions of classic books such as Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island, and Animal Farm.

Artist Spotlight: Ali Güleç

Frame USA‘s sister company Posterservice Inc. is excited to be working with artist and illustrator Ali Güleç, based out of Istanbul, Turkey. Our posters by Ali are a series of decorative skull illustrations that combine beauty with macabre. Ali works using both traditional drawing mediums and digital images to create his designs.

Our most recent poster designed by Ali Güleç is titled “Bloom Skull”. This piece shows a beautiful juxtaposition of life and death. Though the overall composition is of a skull, suggesting a more macabre theme, the skull is made entirely of flowers and plants fully alive and in bloom. The illustration has dark undertones, but also has an over all delicate and decorative aesthetic that makes for perfect wall decor.
