Frame Matting Basics

When it comes to framing a photo or artwork that you created, frame matting plays an important role. Frame matting is responsible for providing that extra “pop” to your artwork or photo, without losing focus of the work itself. At Frame USA, we offer not only a variety of colors, but we also offer a range of mat corner cuts and various grades of matboard. When trying to determine what size matboard you should order, think of how much matting you want to be shown. Typically this is about 2 inches on each side of your piece. However, this reveal can be as narrow, or as wide, as you’d prefer! Another thing that you need to remember when matting your artwork is that in order for your image to not fall through, there is a slight overlap of the mat and printed piece.. This will usually deduct about ¼ inch from each side. Or if there are some markings that you’d like to cover, we can make any custom opening to do so! This is done so your artwork will sit securely behind the mat.

Carefully choosing the right frame and mat to go along with your artwork adds more character, and can really help the whole frame pop!

Custom Picture Frame Upgrades

As a wholesale and custom picture frame expert, I work with many different customers on many different jobs. These orders can range from 5 custom picture frames all the way to 5,000. Over the time I have spent here, I have found that a good amount of customers are not aware of all the added upgrades we offer to any custom or standard frame that we sell.

Custom Picture Frame Backing Upgrade

A common upgrade that we offer, that is also economical, are our backing upgrades. For any flat back or easel back frames (frames 8×12 and smaller), we offer the choice of a Black or White Foam Core upgrade. This would be to replace our standard Corrugated (Cardboard), black cardboard, or easel backing. Foam Core is thicker, sturdier, and has a more professional look that a lot of our picture store gallery and photography customers choose to improve the overall look of their frame. Not only does Foam Core improve the sturdiness and appearance of the back, it also applies more pressure to the mat and picture to fit more snug against the glass. This is an upgrade you can choose for any frame online when you click the custom button. You can also call in and ask for a Foam Core upgrade.

Frame Glazing Upgrade Options

Another common upgrade that we offer is glass. As many customers know, we do not offer real glass on any frame size over 11×14. This is due to shipping concerns and the overall fragileness of a glass sheet bigger than 11×14. We use styrene for any frame larger than 11×14, but we also offer an Acrylic glazing upgrade. This gives the frame a real glass look without the worry of it shattering during shipping. Acrylic is 1/8th of an inch thick and resembles the weight and appearance of real glass.

I always highly recommend Acrylic upgrades for any customer concerned about not being able to have real glass in their larger frames. The cost of Acrylic varies by the size of the frame, but most upgrades won’t break the budget! This upgrade is not offered as a one click on our website, unless you are using our “Design A Frame” feature. You will find both of these upgrades while creating your own custom picture frame. Otherwise, they can be easily quoted by myself or any sales representative.  All you have to do is give us a call and we can break down all of the custom picture frame upgrades we offer!

Every month Frame USA partners with a different local or national charity. We give to each charity through donating time, money, exposure, and resources. For every order places on frameusa.com $0.75 is donated to the charity of the month. For February 2019, the charity is the National Fragile X Foundation.

Fragile X Syndrome is “a genetic condition that causes intellectual disability, behavioral and learning challenges, and various physical characteristics.” There are several types of Fragile X conditions that range in severity and symptoms. These conditions are the most common known genetic cause of intellectual disabilities.

The National Fragile X Foundation focuses on promoting awareness and research for treatments for this condition. They have programs to encourage advocacy for this disorder, including their Sibling & Self-Advocate Program. This program allows children with Fragile X Syndrome and their siblings to connect with others and build relationships. For adults and parents affected by Fragile X, they offer a large community support network with numerous ways to get involved.

The National Fragile X Foundation runs Fragile X clinics throughout the USA. These clinics offer comprehensive evaluations and recommended treatments. They also offer, or can refer you to, genetic counseling, behavior therapy, speech therapy, and more. These clinics work with other institutions to improve research and understandings of Fragile X Syndrome. The treatment guidelines for Fragile X disorders can be found on their website here.

If you’d like to help the National Fragile X Foundation, you can do so by placing an order on frameusa.com during February. You can also become a leadership partner or sign up to give them a monthly donation on their website her

Blue Otter Art

Blue Otter Art presents the watercolors of the deep wilderness, painted on location in the mountains and on the rivers from Alaska to Arizona, Hawaii to the Grand Canyon, and internationally from Canada to New Zealand, Europe, Mexico and the countries of Africa. The artist is Kim Solga, whose paintings capture a moment in the timeless flow of river water, glacier ice, the slow growth of pine, the bloom of wildflower. “I paint on location, perched on a boulder beside whitewater rapids. I sketch from a bed of pine needles beneath a spruce, surrounded by snowbanks, a raven watching from a branch overhead. I climb high onto the mountain, above treeline, into the silent song of bare rocks in late summer.”
Whether framing for a gallery show or for sales on the Blue Otter Art Etsy shop, Kim uses the excellent ash wood frames from FrameUSA.

The art works are framed, and feature vintage post cards, (some over 100 years old), or conservation, state, or international stamps depicting trout or salmon. With these are added flies specifically tied for the piece. I tie each fly individually, I never use mass-produced flies. The pieces are created by me start to finish. I also create small individual framed pieces with a single fly mounted in the frame to be displayed on desks of shelves.

Real Wood Frames

Real Wood vs MDF Wood Frames

What’s the difference between real wood frames and MDF wood frames?

In the world of moulding you will find different types of materials used to create individual styles. It might seem as simple as wood vs plastic, but the real story is much deeper. We’ll start at the beginning of the manufacturing process to see how frames start as trees in a forest, but become our beautiful mouldings.

Real Wood

Real Wood

Let’s start by talking about real wood. Personally, my favorite part about real wood is the visible grains on the frames. It gives the frame a unique and personal feel. The texture can really show off the craftsmanship that goes into making these frames.

So real wood – what is it made out of? Most of our frames that feature real wood come from 2 types of trees: Ash and Pine. Pine is the most common. It’s also featured in one of my favorite series, In Depth. However, Ash is my favorite wood since it’s also used to make baseball bats for the major leagues.

There are big pluses to purchasing a natural and real wood frame. The wood will look amazing and give a rustic and modern look to any room and it is sturdier than an MDF frame!

Real Wood Frames

MDF Wood

MDF is an abbreviation for Medium Density Fiberboard. It is the byproduct of wood chips and sawdust which is then pressurized and held together. Because of this every single piece of MDF looks exactly the same. During the manufacturing process, we add a moulding wrap to the frame. Since every piece of MDF looks the same, it insures that it will always look exactly the same no matter how frames you purchase.

MDF Wood Frames

No matter what you cannot go wrong with choosing one over the other because they both have the biggest plus! They will make an amazing frame!
