History

Danny Thomas

As a young man, Danny Thomas had a simple goal: to entertain people and be successful enough at it to provide for his wife and family. But work wasn’t easy to come by. Unsure of his life’s direction, a young Danny Thomas sought guidance from St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes. If the saint would point to the path he should take, Danny vowed to build a shrine in his name. Success followed Danny’s plea and soon after, the legendary entertainer set about fulfilling his vow to St. Jude. The result was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Danny began raising money for his vision in the early 1950s. He set out across the U.S. to speak about his dream to build St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to any group that would listen asking for support.

“No child should die in the dawn of life”

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital opened its doors on February 4, 1962, based on Danny’s dream that “no child should die in the dawn of life.” Since then, we’ve made incredible strides in childhood cancer research. We’ve helped improve the survival rate of childhood cancer from 20% to 80%. And ALL, the disease with a virtual death sentence in 1962, now has a survival rate of 94 percent.

Today St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the world leader in developing new, improved treatments for children with cancer. Whenever a breakthrough happens during their clinical trials and research they share them so that doctors and scientists can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.

The fundamentals of St. Jude remain the same today as when they opened their doors families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all they should worry about is helping their child live.

The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of their founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.

As of today the treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago.

In August of 2010, the world lost a wonderful young man named, Andy Caress, to Melanoma. During his fight, Andy fought to spread awareness and educate people on the dangers of melanoma. After his passing, his loved ones continued this fight by forming The Andy Caress Melanoma Foundation.

If you’ve been customers with us for some time now you probably recognize that name. The Caress Family is local to Cincinnati and are family friends with our CEO, Dan Regenold’s family. We’ve written about them before, every year in fact since we started this blog, however this is the first time that we have referred to the charity as Melanoma Know More.

Here’s why, in January, the foundation joined forces with Melanoma Know More. The union resulted in a single nonprofit organization in Cincinnati focused on melanoma awareness, outreach and research. As a result, their total combined resources make a stronger and more effective organization. Most importantly, they continue to move towards one common goal: wipe melanoma off the face of the planet.

Melanoma Know More History

MKM has a variety of program initiatives such as Skin Cancer Screenings and School and Youth Education. They also started the Greater Cincinnati Melanoma Warrior Support Network. Pockets Full of Sunshine’s mission is to provide “socially inclusive employment opportunities for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities”.  Special needs individuals are some of the kindest and most joyful people to know. This organization gets their name from describing special needs adults as “rays of sunshine”.

Pockets Full of Sunshine believes that the general public’s discomfort with adults with disabilities comes from the lack of their inclusion in the community. They state on their website “Most individuals with disabilities are truly exceptional people with unique gifts and talents, who each have something to offer their community, be it performing a vocational service, or just offering a friendly smile.” This is why they seek provide opportunities for employment, increased independence, and personal growth for adults with disabilities.

Pockets Full of Sunshine was founded by a Special Education teacher named Dayna and a Speech Language Pathologist named Laurin working together at a school. After bonding as colleagues, they wondered what happened to their special students as they grew older and aged out of the school system. Dayna’s brother sparked an idea by giving her by-product from a mechanical splined shaft and asking if her students could use it for anything. The item looked “exactly like a small yellow sunshine and Dayna was instantly inspired”. This sparked the idea for Pockets Full of Sunshine.

“She arranged for the “sunshines” to be recycled and re-purposed by a local group of special needs adults. They are currently being made into greeting cards, gift tags, magnets and stationary or sold by the “pocket-full” to be used in any crafty way you can dream up! Proceeds from the sale of these products will be put towards opening an eco-friendly, community craft center in Beaufort County which will be fully staffed by intellectually and physically disabled adults.” – http://www.pocketsfullofsun.org/our-story
